Question

Why are communication skills important to my effectiveness as a manager or leader?

There are few careers that do not involve interaction with people. If we are managing or leading others, we have to interact with them. Interaction means communication. For years studies have shown that the manager who is a better communicator will be favored for promotion over the manager who only possesses the technical expertise.

What is coaching?

The word "coaching" has been in use for some time now. Before we tell you what it is, let us tell you what it is NOT.  It is not having someone come in and tell you how to cure all your management or career headaches. Coaching is an art as well as a skill. When done properly, coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximize one's own performance.  It is helping them to learn about internal obstacles and learn ways to overcome them.

How do I know if coaching can help me?

Anyone who is motivated to make changes in their life can benefit from coaching. Coaching holds a mirror up to the individual, showing strengths and possible obstacles for change. The coach is there for support and guidance on how to maximize those strengths and overcome the obstacles that might stand in the way of achieving success.

What questions should I consider when choosing a coach?

Experience, qualifications and training and whether rapport can easily be established. The relationship between you and your coach is a personal one. You need to have confidence that the coach you select can work with you to reach your goals.

How is coaching done?

Coaching can be done in person or on the phone.
